Morning Report: Mike Tyson says Jake Paul fight is ‘what the world really needs right now’

Mike Tyson’s return to professional boxing is back.

New York’s Fanatics Fest hosted several major sports press conferences, talk shows and meetups this past Sunday. Lineups included the first pre-fight press conference for Tyson vs. Jake Paul since it was rescheduled for November 15.

If there was much criticism of the bout before it was rescheduled, it only intensified after a health scare pulled Tyson from the original July 20 date. Instead, Paul fought Mike Perry that night, whom he beat by TKO in the sixth round, putting us back on track for the spectacle. Tyson, 58, says he’s fine and believes this has to happen to more than just himself and the “problem child.”

“This is what the world really needs right now,” Tyson said IMPULSIVE. “The pay-per-view proves it, right? So it’s the truth.

“Look, I know it looks crazy. Look at the YouTube guy, look at me, but look what we brought here. Look what we did. It’s not funny at all. You can’t laugh at it.”

Tyson’s bout will be his first in the professional format (50-6, 2 NC) since losing to Kevin McBride in June 2005. “Iron Mike” made his first return at the 2020 show against the legendary Roy Jones. Jr., but that has been the extent of Tyson’s operations for the past 19 years.

Paul, on the other hand, is riding a four-fight winning streak and has only one loss in his 11-fight career, which began in 2020. Despite Tyson’s recent one-off appearances, he is adamant that the classic early version of Tyson has not gone away, and what makes his what’s different about his match with Paul is his respect for him as a boxer.

“It’s going to happen,” Tyson said of the killer. “But this is what I’ve learned from past experience. When that tough guy Mike Tyson comes out, when it’s not necessary to come out, I’m always in handcuffs. So I’m very careful when that guy comes out.

“Every time I drink or I’m ready to fight, I break out in handcuffs (laughs).

“I take him very seriously. These people don’t take him seriously,” he added. “I have to get him before he gets too good. If you think I’m too old for this fight, you need to come tell me to my face.
