The opening race of the meeting is a sprint over the little-used 5f89y distance and I think the distance could be perfect for a progressive A bold optimist. Trained by Danny McLoughlin, Ireland’s youngest licensed handler, Bold Optimist ran really well in a couple of Premier handicaps in the summer when driven forward in cheekpieces, but improved when the reins were dropped last time out at the Curragh.

As we said last time, we don’t think he’s a real stayer over a stiff two miles or longer, but the nature of the York course suits him and he’s now won two and finished second once in four handicap starts at Knavesmire. His price has dropped overnight, but he’s still interested.

MIXING OF SPIRITS has a wide draw but is not a problem at 1¾m or beyond in York where a wide stance on the back straight can be beneficial. He has proven very consistent in staying on the move, despite not having the tactical speed to get in front of his head. The big field is fine and he should be there again.
